California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Art Young (1866-1943) was a leading socialist cartoonist and humorist whose work appeared in The Masses (1910-1917) and elsewhere. He was born in Monroe, Wisconsin, studied at the Academy of Design in Chicago, where he first illustrated news stories and saw his cartoons published in various newspapers.
